Improve durability and Increased drilling efficiency

The Kymera Mach 6 bit’s novel design boosts both durability and drilling efficiency. A robust cutter layout improves shoulder durability and provides better core-out resistance to extend run length and improve dull conditions when drilling through the toughest rock. The design prioritizes cutter placement in the shoulder area where it is most needed, while a true 3-blade-to-center design better distributes cutter loading to ensure cone cutter integrity under high drilling loads.  The Cone Guard bit body design provides a reliable cone retention mechanism to reduce nonproductive time (NPT) risk associated with lost cones.

 

Optimize for any application

The proprietary 3D Tetrahedron™ bit drilling simulation software from Baker Hughes is the first step to optimizing the design of every Kymera Mach 6 bit. Tetrahedron uses a polygonal surface mesh to accurately simulate bit-rock interactions under downhole drilling conditions and analyze the Kymera bit’s PDC and TCI dual-cutting mechanism together in one model. 

The software can simulate bit performance in a range of different applications and drilling environments, including:

  • Rock types ranging from homogeneous to interbedded and with varying hardness
  • Bottomhole assemblies (BHAs) including rotary and rotary steerables, adjustable kickoff (AKO) motors, and bit reamers
  • Vertical, deviated, or extended-reach wellbores
  • On-center or off-center drilling (with bent motor BHAs)
  • Drilling conditions that contribute to bit whirl and wear

Kymera Mach 6 improves bit integrity with a reinforced shoulder design and enhanced leg integrity. The reinforced shoulder uses a detailed design process to ensure integrity of the ShadowCut cutter pockets. A finite element analysis (FEA) model predicts pocket reliability using cutter loads from Tetrahedron to improve durability and performance consistency.  Leg integrity is enhanced with design and manufacturing updates that reduce stress by up to 30% compared to legacy Kymera bits, providing greater reliability and reduced NPT risk in extreme loading scenarios.
